Hakomi is a body-centered (somatic) approach. The body is viewed as a “map of the psyche” – a door that can be opened to reveal the entire unconscious belief system of the individual. The body’s habitual patterns can become a powerful access route to deeply held core material.
Current neuroscience research has confirmed the basis for many foundational aspects of the Hakomi Method, including the effectiveness of mindfulness, loving presence, empathic attunement, limbic resonance, and memory reconsolidation.
We develop exquisite sensitivity and attunement, using empathic skills to read and contact subtle, unconscious cues. When integrated into the session with unique Hakomi techniques, it creates a rapid, experiential access route to unconscious core beliefs and implicit memories that invisibly shape our lives and behavior. Once conscious and directly experienced, these are available for memory re- consolidation and transformation, including the healing of attachment issues. This experiential process evokes a powerful “felt sense” for the client, allowing them to take ownership of core patterns as they emerge, and to integrate new options.
This workshop provides an immersive introduction to the Method, this includes lectures from thefaculty, experiential exercises, demonstrations, discussion, group process sessions, and supervision.

Before each training meeting you will receive a pre-recorded 30-60 minute lecture that introduces the next topic or skill. There are also regular short reading assignments. Most students do not find these pieces to be a significant burden at all. Because the bulk of this work and our teaching style is experiential, showing up to class and participating fully is the most important part of learning the method.
-
We offer a limited number of partial scholarships for the training and workshops. Priority in awarding scholarships is given to students who identify as a member of a marginalized group.
Workshop specific: Partial scholarships may be available for anyone with membership within a community of color or other marginalized group. Please reach out to the contact person listed for the workshop for details.
Training specific: Scholarship requests can be submitted via email by students who have applied for a training and paid the application fee. Especially for newer therapists, Hakomi offers practitioners the chance to learn the relational skills that foster a felt sense of safety and security in a therapeutic relationship, which is essential for somatic trauma work to take place.
While Hakomi works in depth with memory reconsolidation so clients may heal and rewire the core formative experiences and patterns that create their unconscious beliefs, with traumatic activation we diverge from going into deeper unconscious material and support resourcing and getting back in the window of tolerance. We teach students how to recognize traumatic activation and to support basic resourcing. If you intend to work with populations that experience shock trauma, severe PTSD or C-PTSD (relationship trauma), we recommend taking additional trauma training with the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, etc.

Certification is proficiency based, rather than completion based. There is not a guarantee of becoming certified. Most students who pursue certification either take an Advanced Training or join a supervision group with a Hakomi Trainer after completing Levels One and Two.
This process typically takes an additional year or two after completing Levels 1 & 2. To become certified, you must demonstrate full proficiency in the Hakomi Method with two different Hakomi Trainers. The timeline of Certification differs from person to person, and is best viewed as a next educational step, and not as a testing process.
-
The Hakomi Method is taught in a sequence. Each segment builds on techniques and information taught in previous segments. Absences can have a significant impact on learning, as well as on group cohesion. Students are required to attend all hours of the training, except in the case of emergency, illness, or other events that cannot be otherwise scheduled (e.g. weddings, births, graduations, etc.) We understand that occasionally schedule conflicts arise, and a student may miss several hours of the training. We expect you to make every effort not to schedule things during training hours.
If you miss more than 15 hours in each level of the training (30 total over Levels 1 & 2) you will be required to hire a TA to tutor you on the missed material, and supervise practice sessions.
Your Lead Trainer must be notified of absences in advance, unless it is an emergency.

You can still become a Hakomi Graduate, and participate in Advanced Training or Supervision Groups in pursuit of being a Certified Hakomi Practitioner if you’re not licensed.
To become a Certified Hakomi Therapist requires a graduate degree and state licensure, or being on a path toward licensure.
The context of your own practice with clients, and the title you use, must follow the laws of your state. Almost all states require a license to practice psychotherapy. Even if you’re a Hakomi Graduate, and certified in the Hakomi Method, you are not fully qualified to practice psychotherapy. This requires a graduate degree, internship, and many hours of supervised practice. States vary somewhat in their requirements. There is more information on this in the Terms and Conditions in our website's Directory of Practitioners.
You can integrate many aspects of Hakomi into a holistic healing practice, coaching practice or other professional practice. We often suggest that non-degree practitioners take additional graduate level psychology courses.
